Weekly Summer Linky: Accomplishment I am Proud of...

I'm back for I Heart Grade 3's Weekly Summer Link Up and this weeks topic is "An Accomplishment I am Proud of."

In June 2010 I completed my teaching credential and was on the hunt to land a teaching job for fall.   At the time, the teaching job market in California was full of teachers looking for jobs and the competition for positions was quite steep in the local areas where I lived.  I remember receiving an e-mail about a job posting closing early because they had over 600 applicants for one position!  Yikes!  It was a little daunting!  But, I was determined to get a full time position for fall and so I decided to expand my search area to places all over California.

In early August I got a call to interview for a position located in Northern California.  At this time I was still living at home in Southern California and was about a 6 hour drive away from this school district.  Call me crazy, but I agreed to the interview and even told them I would come to interview in person the NEXT day!  I packed a bag, booked a last minute flight and off I went!

I have to admit I was a little scared.  I had never traveled alone before and because this was for an interview I was already a little nervous.  Upon arrival to the airport I quickly picked up my rental car and found my way to the school for the interview.  I arrived early, took a few minutes to collect myself and before I knew it I was sitting in the interview chair across from four people.  30 minutes later and the interview was done.

Right after the interview I walked out to my car and called my mom to tell her how it went, while on the phone with her the principal of the school beeped in.  I clicked over and was offered the position!  Wahoo!  I accepted and was so excited...until I realized that it was Wednesday and that kids started school the very next Wednesday (Yes, 1 week away) and that I currently lived 6 hours away and that it was my first year teaching so I literally had no real supplies and .... Ahhhhh!

BUT, I did it!  I stayed the night and the next day I signed my contract,  found a place to live and then flew home to pack.  On Friday afternoon my amazing family drove with me to my new home and helped me to get settled.  By Tuesday afternoon my classroom and little apartment were set up and I was ready for kids to start Wednesday morning.  Trust me when I say it was a crazy week, but I am so proud that I took the leap, landed a job, moved, and made it through the entire year!  So, yes I'd say this is an accomplishment I will always be proud of.

What is an accomplishment you are proud of? Link up or head on over to I Heart Grade 3 to read others posts.  Have a great Thursday!

  1. Wow! Kelly!

What an amazing story - and it all happened so quickly! For my first teaching position, I moved to an isolated Inuit village just above the Arctic circle in Northern Quebec, Canada. What an adventure that was - but it makes for a great story just like your own!

Thanks for linking up! I'm glad to have you a part of the link-up!
