With Thanksgiving next week this past week was filled with TURKEY day fun! Each day I planned a hands on turkey themed activity and wanted to share with you just what we did! I try to keep our activities pretty simple, materials to a minimum, and of course they are short and sweet. My 3 year old LOVED all the activities and even my 17 month old joined in the fun BUT don't let their ages stop you from adjusting these activities for pre-k and kinder babies because you SO CAN and they'd love it!
Play-Doh Turkeys
This activity was probably the favorite of the week and it's so simple to set up! Grab a chip/dip tray, add some Play-Doh, then toss in items they can use to create a turkey like feathers, googly eyes, pom-poms, cut up paper for beaks, and pipe cleaners. Both my girls LOVED this activity. This would be so fun to do in the classroom too! You could easily tie it into a writing lesson or even math!
Turkey Haircut
Does your kiddo need scissor cutting practice?! If so this activity is perfect! Start by having your kiddo create a paper plate turkey. Click here to grab the face cut-outs we used for FREE! Have your child color, cut, and glue the turkey face onto the paper plate. Then glue feathers to the back of the plate. Now your little one is ready to get cutting!
Pin the Feather on the Turkey
Build those fine motor skills with this activity! For this activity you just need two things - a colander and some feathers. Then let your little one go wild! I added a turkey face by taping it to the front of the colander (not pictured ) for some theme fun!
Turkey Feather Counting
Download the FREE printable and cards by clicking here! This one is pretty self explanatory. Print the turkey sheet and cards. Have your child pick a card and then count and add that many feathers to the turkey. This one easily fits kindergarten math standards.
Contact Paper Turkey
If you've got little ones at home and have never used contact paper GO GET SOME NOW! Seriously my girls love when I tape a sheet to the wall and there are so many activities you can use it for. For this activity all I did was add a cut out turkey and then gave my daughter a cup of feathers and she was set to go! You can build on this activity by having your little on count the feathers, make patterns, talk about colors etc.
Rice Turkey Handprint
Handprint crafts are my favorite! For this one we switched it up and instead of painting our hands we used rice! To make this little craft you will need a paper plate, brown rice, colored rainbow rice (click here for a how to), chocolate chips, Goldfish, and Elmer's glue. First trace your child's hand in the middle of the paper plate. Then fill the inside of the outline with glue. Add brown rice to the palm and rainbow rice to the fingers, shake off the excess. Last add a chocolate chip for the eye and Goldfish for a beak. Save as a keepsake or cut it out and add it to a Thanksgiving card that reads, "Happy Thanksgiving! From your little TURKEY."
Feed the Turkey
For our last activity of the week I decided to come up with a turkey song to help us practice our letters! Together we sang the song and then I had my daughter pick a magnetic letter, name it, and then "feed" it to the turkey (I created the turkey container out of an oatmeal tub). She loved the song and it was a great way to practice letter ID. You can grab the song print out FREE by clicking on the image below.
